Alone Again
WHEN I ARRIVE AT Busterâs the next morning, his dad is standing in the driveway watching the workers. Busterâs father has a flattop like Busterâs, and his hair is red â just a more weary shade of red. He is wearing a checked shirt and a tie with numbers painted on it. I wonder if all mathematicians wear ties with numbers on them, kind of like a uniform.
The workmen are putting in the forms for pouring concrete. I know thatâs what theyâre doing because Iâve gone on job sites with my father.
âCement truck coming today, sir?â
He looks at me. âHavenât seen you around before,â he says.
âWe just moved here. Iâm a friend of Busterâs.â
âBuster?â
I canât remember Busterâs real name. Luckily, Mr. Keaton puts two and two together.
âKevin,â he says.
âRight, Kevin.â I introduce myself and shake his hand. Iâm pretty good at knowing what to do with grownups. When you move a lot itâs an important skill to learn.
âIs Bus â I mean, is Kevin up yet?â
He frowns again. âKevin?â
âYour son.â
âYes, I know who he is,â he says. âBut, heâs gone.â
I go cold all over.
âGone, sir?â
âUp north with Mrs. Keaton. Up to her folksâ place in Wakefield for a bit of a getaway.â
âOh.â Iâm relieved heâs not dead. But Iâm still kind of shocked. Maybe he phoned me when we were out on our drive. Or maybe he didnât because our number isnât in the book yet.
âWhen will he be back, sir?â
He sighs. âWell, Iâll tell you, sonny. Heâll be back when heâs had a chance to do some serious thinking.â That sounds ominous. Itâs hard to think of Buster doing much serious thinking. âHe started up at the dinner table the other night about some wild cat loose in the neighbourhood. Said heâd seen it himself. Thatâs why Iâve sent him up-country for a bit.â
âWhere heâll be safe,â I say.
Now Mr. Keaton looks downright angry.
âTarnation!â he says. âI donât know about your parents, but we donât have much patience with cockamamie tales in the Keaton household. Thereâs enough real danger around, what with the Reds threatening world domination.â
âYes, sir.â
âWho spreads these rumours, anyway?â he asks. Iâm not sure if he means about the Reds or the panthers. âWell, Kevinâs not going to hear such nonsense up at his Grandmother McGregorâs. Now, thereâs a woman who has no time for a runaway imagination.â
I donât know what to say. I thank Mr. Keaton, because you have to be polite to grownups, even crazy ones. As I ride away on Diablo I try to imagine living in a bomb shelter with Mr. Keaton for twelve years. Yikes! Iâd rather take my chances with the mutants.
James answers my knock at his front door. I smile, relieved to see him, but then my smile slips.
âWhatâs wrong?â I ask. He looks down and kicks at the welcome mat with the toe of his running shoe. âYou donât have to tell me,â I say quickly, because I have this horrible feeling heâs got some really bad news.
